Take Me to That Landscape

by Hanna Mattes

/
  • Book/Magazine + Digital Album

With images and poems by Hanna Mattes and including essays by Irmgard Emmelhainz and David Rothenberg that shed a light on two specific aspects of Take Me to That Landscape: the aquatic and the erotic.

David Rothenberg’s Undersound, describes his obsession with the tiniest of underwater sounds that finally brings him to the meaning of life. Polyamorous Love Songs and Sexuality in the Pluriverse, by Irmgard Emmelhainz, weaves Hanna’s poetry into the historic context of sexuality, eroticism and queer art since the 1960’s.

The featured photographic series Aquatic Antipode (Hanna Mattes, 2022), was made at the same time as the musical collaboration. It picks up on the sentiment of being far away from each other with no means of connecting in the real world. Every image is a collage of at least two different negatives of which one was always taken in a different country and sometimes continent than the other. The depicted swamps, ponds, oceans and aquatic zoo life collide mimicking a mirroring effect that doesn’t add up.

about

In Take Me to That Landscape spoken word and prose-poetry collide with experimental jazz music and nature sounds. The texts describe fantasies about sexuality, romance, touch, and transcendence. Both Ernst Reijseger and David Rothenberg added their respective musical interpretations.

Ernst Reijseger is a non-repertoire cellist, following a non-traditional path. As my father and long-time collaborator of Ernst’s, Werner Herzog, said: "Ernst can interpret anything from the outburst of a volcano to the emotional rollercoaster some of Hanna's texts describe.“ Ernst is a creative partner of film- and theater makers, actors, storytellers, poets, dancers, DJs, painters, sculptors, photographers, glassblowers, inventors, and horses. Amongst many other things, he is inspired by the plucking and fingerpicking techniques of (bass-) guitar players as well as the rhythmic approach of drummers.

David Rothenberg’s compositions are based on acousmatic sounds, that is, sounds whose source is invisible. Rothenberg’s rhythms can’t be grasped, his instruments are made of pond creatures and plants. On long walks in upstate New York, he made recordings of sounds, ranging from the rhythmic movements of tiny pond creatures to the wind atop a mountain. He used those as a basis for improvisations with other instruments like the clarinet and the piano.

Ancient and modern myths inform my work. Devdutt Pattanaik explains that „mythologies are somebody’s truth“ rather than the truth. I look for these subjective truths, mysteries, and enchantment and translate them into images, making visible what cannot be seen with the naked eye. Take Me to That Landscape is my first endeavor in rhythm and music.

Please check out the book that comes with this album. It includes a photographic series that I developed at the same time and texts that shine a light on this collaboration written by Irmgard Emmelhainz, David Rothenberg, and myself.
